Quite a few friends of mine argued that epilation can be painful and asked the question, “how to use an epilator without pain?”. Before I divulge the answer, it is important to note that epilating is like tweezing on steroids (tweezing rapidly).

Actually, the word epilate comes from the french word epiler which means to tweeze. Interesting.

Tweezing is removing hair from the hair follicle, one strand of hair at a time.

While epilating with an epilator is must faster; the head of an epilator is so designed to remove multiple strands of hair at a time by uprooting them from the hair follicles.

An epilator is simply an electrical device with a rotating head that plucks multiple strands of hair from the hair follicle at once.

Some epilator heads contain up to 72 tweezers that mechanically grasping multiple strands of hairs simultaneously, pulling them out from the root at once. Ouch.

Imagine a better way, weeks with ultra-smooth skin, wow, without ever having to shave (for at least four weeks). It is time to learn how to use an epilator without pain.

To be honest, epilating gives good results but it comes with a little pain. In this article, I shared a number of secret techniques that will dramatically reduce the pain of epilation.

A number of these techniques were learned over a number of years of use of this method of unwanted hair removal, secrets shared between best friends and the good old google search technique.

Come into my lair and learn some of these secret techniques revealed on how to use an epilator without pain.  They are laid out in the following tips on how to use epilator without pain:

#1 Start by choosing the right epilator

A great starting point is to get a good epilator. The market is filled with a wide selection of epilators, and selecting the right one, can be a bit baffling. Hence, it is always recommended to opt for a multi-purpose epilator.

These multi-purpose epilators tend to include a wide assortment of accessories that make epilating more convenient.

These accessories include skin contact cap, massage cap, shaver head, owing to which it is easy to remove hair from different parts of the body such as arms, legs, face, underarms, armpits, as well as from the bikini parts.

Definitely, want to look good at the poolside or on the beach.

A good epilator also comes with the wet and dry feature which is effective in pulling the hair from its roots in the shower or bath without causing much pain.

It is recognized that doing it in the bath with lukewarm water significantly reduces pain to a much more bearable level.

Purchasing a premium quality epilator is the way to go. Investing in a low-end product is a false economy.

The low-quality epilators are low powered and the hair normally gets caught easily in the device, which makes epilating painful. As a result of the built quality, the one I use and recommend to my friends is the Braun Silk-épil 9 as mentioned earlier.

#2 Take a shower before you start the process

Taking a warm shower is a grand idea. As you go for a shower in lukewarm water, before epilating, your pores would open, making it much easier for the epilator to pull the hair out from the follicle.

Besides this, having a shower before epilating is useful in removing oils and grime from the skin, thereby leaving it healthy and clean and easier for the epilator to glide over the skin and catch all the roots.

As the hair becomes easy to remove after taking a shower, you are going to have a comfortable and enjoyable epilating.

#3 Exfoliate your skin, before epilating

Exfoliating your body is a good way to prepare your skin for epilating. It is essential to exfoliate the skin before using an epilator as exfoliation is efficient in the removal of ingrown hair and dead skin cells that might have resulted in pain or likely infection.

Buffing is awesome before you epilate. Use a grainy exfoliator to thoroughly buff your skin to get rid of any dead skin cells on the top layer of your skin.

If you are seeking out the best way to exfoliate your skin consider using a body scrub, loofah, or exfoliating chemicals

Do the exfoliation process a day before epilating. In addition, you should also make sure to perform exfoliation after a few days of epilating to enhance the tenderness of the skin.

However, people with overly sensitive skin should refrain from exfoliation as it will only add to the pain.

Exfoliating before epilating minimises the chance of getting ingrown hairs. In opposition to popular belief, it is not only people with curly hair that get ingrown hair after epilating. Anyone can if proper hygiene is not maintained.

Personally, I scrub my skin thoroughly every day, it is especially important that I do so on the day of epilating. I use the exfoliating gloves with a daily moisturising body wash. I am fascinated with the exfoliating body wash. It leaves my skin refreshed.

#4 Shave hair to get it to the right length

If you are not a fan of exfoliation, you can go for shaving a few days before you undergo epilation.

It is regarded as an indirect means of exfoliation as it will be reducing the length of hairs to a more uniform length more suitable for the epilator to work at its optimum.

It may also get rid of some types of ingrown hairs, owing to which epilating will be much less painful.

With shaving, the hair will grow back after a few days of being clean-shaven, after which, you can carry out the epilation process.

Apart from this, you can also consider waxing the hair and then perform epilating once the hair grows back to the shortest possible length.

Always take a look at the instruction manual, included in the kit, to find out the length of hair, you can epilate. The instruction manual will also offer information about the use of the epilator and the basics of using an epilator.

According to research, plucking longer hair strands is considered to be more painful, in comparison to the shorter one. Hence, you should refrain from using these products on longer length hair.

You should go for shaving or trimming the hair at first, according to your preferences, after which, you should do epilating once you find the growth of smaller hair.

This is helpful in the removal of hair from the roots, thereby making the process of epilating much less painful than ever.

#5 Begin with the lowest settings

The majority of the epilators, available in the market, are equipped with two different speed settings which include high speed and low speed.

If you are new to epilating, start on the lowest setting as it will provide sufficient time to your body to get used to the sensation of plucking. This will reduce the intensity of pain.

Once you are adapted to the feeling, you will be capable of adjusting to the high-speed setting for the removal of hair from the hard areas such as the legs.

In addition to this, epilating will be much less sensitive as you make use of the lower settings.

This plays an indispensable role in making the process of epilating a breeze. Hence, you do not require spending an ample amount of time while epilating the legs.

Thus, you can proceed to the other sensitive areas of the body which include knees, ankles.

#6 Using wet/dry epilators

Wet/dry epilators are recognized to be the best option for shower and bath as they are waterproof.

In case you have purchased the wet/dry epilators, it is possible to do epilating during showers as it is effective in reducing the pain, since the skin becomes softer during the time.

But you need to remember that the wet epilators are known to be less efficient, in comparison to the dry epilators, as you need to conduct several passes on a single area to ensure the complete removal of the hair.

Moreover, the process is going to take an ample amount of time. In case you want to try a dry epilator, you require using a lot of shaving cream to fasten the process.

Using the wet and dry epilator is the best way to epilate if you don’t have a very high pain threshold. You can, therefore, epilate in the shower or bath when your pores are open.

Open pores cause the hair and root to be plucked more easily. I use the Braun Silk-épil 9, which is watertight up to five metres, to epilate in the bath.

The Braun Silk-épil 9 has Micro Grip tweezer technology which plucks hair closer to the skin. This is so much more efficient and results in super smooth skin especially if you have really fine hair.

#7 Keep your skin taut while epilating

If you are searching for an ideal option for plucking more hair at once, it is recommended to stretch the skin with the aid of the freehand.

It is beneficial in avoiding any unnecessary folding and squeezing of the skin.

This process is regarded as a smart choice for epilating the private areas of the body, including the underarms.

#8 Use a numbing cream

People with super sensitive skin can use a bit of numbing cream on the area before plating.

You can use a numbing cream like the Dr Numb Cream to numb your skin temporarily for replication.

The cream is used in the tattoo industry to numb the skin for inking.

The active ingredient is Topical Numbing Cream Lidocaine (5%). This cream will give you a small window where you can epilate without much pain.

Numbing cream is especially useful when epilating sensitive areas like the underarms and bikini area.

What else can you do to eliminate pain while epilating?

If you like the ideas above, you will definitely like these additional tips that could be used to reduce pain.

Epilate after your menstrual cycle (If you are a woman or girl)

The bodies of women are considered to be more sensitive during the periods. Hence, in case you are having a regular cycle, you can do epilating after 3-4 days, once your periods are over.

Again, few women get low sensitivity at the time of the ovulation process owing to the rise in the hormones.

Thus, in case there is any variation, you should monitor your sensitivity for a month to understand the specific time when the body is less sensitive.

Use Talcum Powder for the Epilator to Glide Over Your Skin

In case you are encountering any troubles while gliding the epilator over the skin smoothly, you should apply talcum powder before you start the process.

Thus, the surface of the skin will be smoother and you will be capable of gliding the epilator smoothly and easily in different directions of the skin for achieving better and effective results.

Reduce Your Intake of Soda or Coffee

Caffeine happens to be a stimulant and it contributes to adding to the sensitivity of the skin.

Hence, in case you have made your mind to epilate, you should refrain from drinking soda or coffee on the same day, you will epilate.

In case you have already taken either of the drinks, it is recommended to wait for 6-8 hours so that the caffeine can exit the system.

Take Your Time When Epilating, Do not hurry

The process of epilating involves putting one hand on the skin whereas you require gliding the epilator over the skin gently.

If you are in a hurry, it might not be a great day for epilating. It is because rushing can be detrimental, leading to accidents.

Most of the time, the process is carried out on any delicate body organ and hence you should take out sufficient time to carry it slowly.

You need to give due attention to the process so that you can have hair-free, tender, soft and smooth skin at the end.

Taking Pain Killers Could Help

You can also take painkillers, a few hours before you begin the process of epilating. However, you should try this tip only a few times in the beginning to reduce the pain.

Once you get adapted to the process of epilating, you are not going to feel any sort of pain.

Thus, you do not require taking these painkillers anymore. You can pop any of them over the counter painkillers for reducing the inflammation and pain after the process of epilating is over.

Try Distracting Yourself

In case you are feeling any sort of pain during epilating, you can distract yourself to reduce it.

Hence, you can indulge in some activities to divert your attention. You can consider watching a movie, listening to the music of your choice or talking to your friends.

It will focus your mind on the other activities and thus you will be capable of getting rid of the pain to a great extent.

What to do after epilating?

There are a number of things that you can do after epilating to soothe your skin. Consider using a bit of aloe.

Use of Aloe Vera.

You tend to suffer a little pain after you have completed the process of plating.

Hence, it is recommended to rub ice cubes or aloe Vera gel on the skin. It is effective in preventing swelling, redness and ensures a comfortable and soothing skin.

How To Use An Epilator Without Pain: Other Thing To Consider

Do not epilate on the day of the occasion

At times, women get rashes and allergies owing to the improper use of the epilators.

Thus, as a precaution, you should make sure to use it 24 hours before the occasion. It is because in case any allergy or rashes appear, it will go away within a specific period.

Can I use a lotion to relieve the pain of epilating?

Using lotion can offer relief to people, suffering from any pain after epilating. You, however, need to keep in mind that these creams are not going to make the process easier or less painful. Since it is applied after.

Instead, the application of any lotion or cream before starting the process can do more harm than good. It is because the layer of the creams creates an interruption between the device and the skin.

Owing to this, the tweezers of the epilators fail to pluck the hair from its roots. It ends in making your skin uneven, reddish and rough. Besides this, it also delays the process.

Hence, the best time for the application of these creams is after you have completed the epilating.

Applying ice pack

Ice packs are used on a wide scale by people with sensitive skin. You can also consider applying an ice pack or cold compress to reduce the pain.

They are also effective in preventing the in-growth hairs because it quickly closes the pores to prevent dead skin or bacteria from getting into the pores.

Using a nourishing moisturizer

The application of the nourishing moisturizer is useful in reducing the irritation of the skin. It is useful in soothing your skin.

Conclusion

Epilating comes with a little pain because you are essentially plucking the hair out from the root.

You can follow the steps above to make the process as pain-free as possible. Hopefully, you learn how to use an epilator without pain.
